How much does it cost to replace a home A/C condenser?

For a 2 story home I have 2 A/C consensers. My lower level condenser has stopped working.

How much does it cost to replace a home A/C condenser?
whats wrong with the condensing unit you have...if the compressor isnt locked up or burnt out it would be way cheaper to just fix it...it would even be cheaper to put a compressor in the unit unless it is very old and is in rough shape...corroded coils and rusting frame...if you change the condensing unit the cost depends on the size of the unit and what a hvac company would charge you to put it in...you can replace with exactly what you have as long as you can find it...if you have a 10 seer unit you can replace it with a 10 seer unit as long as it is not a complete new install job....r22 is going to be avalable for at least ten more years so i would also go with a unit that uses this freon as to changing to one with r410a as you will have to change both condenser and evaporator unit.....you also can put a 14 or 16 seer condensing unit on a 10 seer evaporating unit but you will only end up with a condensing unit of 10 seer...I charge 350 dollars to change out the condensing unit plus parts( filter dryers, silver solder and a gallon of cleaner to clean out the evaporator and linesets, torch gas, extra freon, and the condensing unit) ...again i need to know what brand you have now and what tonnage it is in order to tell you what a new condenser would cost,,,,
Reply:Wow I think I would vote that the most complete and accurate answer to ANY question I have seen on here.

To add to the above question I want to replace Evaporative cooling with AC.

Bottom line:

How much to install AC in place of Evap ( Arizona) Report It

Reply:Depending on what you decide to replace it with you are looking anywhere from $2000-$5000.

If the unit is not real old you can save a lot by repairing it. Is the compressor bad? A new compressor sure costs less than a whole new condenser unit.

If you decide to go to the new refrigerant (R-410a) you will have to replace your evaporator coil as well. This will add a huge cost that may never pay off unless your electricity rates are super high.

I would replace with a condenser that uses R-22 it is still cheaper than R-410a and despite what those trying to sell you a whole new overpriced system say it will still be available if you get a leak in 20 years.
Reply:Time to buy a new air conditioner. We live in hot West Texas and buy a new one just about every ten years or so. They are on sell in August. You will not find them after September.

It's always good to get two or three estimates from your yellow pages in the telephone book. Ask for a written contract as to what they are going to do for you. Buy a name brand.
