How do i troubleshoot my outside a/c unit?

I have a carrier a/c unit that just started giving problems. the fan works only when i push start it and the compressor works intermittently on start up. unit cools fine when both components are running. one time when i got the fan to run, the compressor came on a couple minutes later.

How do i troubleshoot my outside a/c unit?
start capacitor on condensor fan.
Reply:It sounds like the dual run capacitor is bad. For a step by step troubleshooting guide, go to the air conditioner page at my source.
Reply:You really can not do much but make sure the power is on or off.

You need to have a HVAC contractor go from here.

If you not know of any go to Carriers web site.

There you type in your zip code, and they will give you a list of factory authorized dealers, who are factory trained.

Any of these contractors should be able to help.

Good Luck.
Reply:Sounds like cond fan not runnig causing compressor to over heat. replace fan and cap. save compressor.
