How do i cover some of the a/c vents so that i get more cool air from the remaining?

its very hot and we have a/c vents in areas that we don't really need them, like extra rooms etc. do u think closing them completely will help cooling in other rooms? If yes, how do i completely close them?

This is actually not a good idea. According to my brother, who was an air conditioning/heating and ventilation technitain and business owner, the system in your house is designed to all be opened for proper operation. The unit is sized to match the total cubic footage of the house to be cooled when installed. By closing off some vents or rooms you create back pressure that the system is not designed to handle. Also, the system is designed to remove moisture from the air. By closing rooms, the moisture in those rooms will remain causing mold and mildew to grow.





If your system isn't cooling properly, it may need to be recharged or have some other service done to it. If you have added living space to your home after the unit was installed, you probably will need a new unit to match the increased space. Likely what you really need is more insulation in the attic and perhaps in the walls. Also, try blocking the sun from hitting your home from the outside, particularly the windows. This can be done by erecting trellises close to the house and allowing vines to grow on them. Select vines that will block the sun during the summer and will die back to let the sun shine through during the winter. While you're at it, provide shade to the unit outside too.

Reply:do not cover the vents, your a/c puts out the air needed to cool . by covering the vents, you may burn up the compressor in your unit and it will cost you more to get it fixed then to replace it. DO NOT COVER YOUR VENTS
Reply:First of all are they floor vents or wall vents.???


if they have the slotted metal covers you can put a piece of cardboard cut to size inside under the slots when they are closed or plastic. of course if they are for heat too then you have to remove plastic.But close them up take them off or up and put the cardboard fitted to size in tightly. This should help.
Reply:Here we go with these almighty a/c guys again, BS plain and simple, Why can't you close off vents, back pressure, gimme a freakin break, Then why may I ask do they make vents that can be shut? I have been working in building Maintenance for 23 years and I have shut countless vents for people, because they were too cold, and never had a problem, matter of fact I have two shut off in my own house and they been shut for 15 years and I still have the same unit which is 17 years old, A/C guys "think"they no everything, best off to talk to a wall, you would get a better response
Reply:You can adjust things for air flow, cover it or adjust the grill or dampers if you have them, but do no close off the Vents- the air in your home is Recirculated over and over from each room, Air is drawn back to the Unit, by Cold Air Vents, if no vent is in the Room, it will be pulled under the Door- so if you create a Hot Room, that hot air will be drawn back into the Cool air stream and defeat your purpose.
Reply:I've seen a number of inventive ways used to cover them. For floor vents, my mom had sample carpet pads that are the same color as the carpet to cover them. For ceiling and wall vents I've seen tape used or better yet a large magnetic sheet. The magnetic sheet can be painted to the color of your wall or you can even adhere wallpaper to it, if your wall is wallpapered.





Many vents have dials on the side to close them, but these don't often close all the way.





You may actually need a bigger air conditioning unit. Sometimes they do put them in too small. For two story houses, they sometimes recommend two seperate heating and cooling systems for the upstairs and the downstairs (one for upstairs and one for downstairs). This also helps keep the floors an even temperature.





Having the blower on more often, not the airconditioner, just the blower will also help keep the temperature the same. Some fans may also help.
Reply:If your cover plates don't have the ability to be closed you can always use the dampers on the ducting. If neither of these are available to you then you can buy magnetic cover material at HD or Lowe's and just cover the vents in the extra rooms.

Reply:It will help to close the vents in the rooms you don't use. Depending on how old your house is, there should be a dial on the right or left of your vent. Turn it and it should close. Hope it helps:)
