How do you remove freon from an a/c or fridge safely?

I want to recycle fridges and a/c's safely without hurting the enviroment , do I need special equipment?

How do you remove freon from an a/c or fridge safely?
Yes, about $1,500 worth of equipment for starters. Recovery unit, reclaimer bottle, manifold gauge set, and probably line tapping fittings.

Plus, you'll need to obtain an EPA certification under 40 CFR.

It is just easier to have your local waste management company or a small appliance repair shop do it for a small fee.

You are allowed by CFRs to reuse refrigerant as long as it was your refrigerant to begin with and you put it back in your own appliances. You might not even need an EPA cert for this, but you will still be subject to adherence to the EPA laws and regulations.

Recovering refrigerant to resell (or reuse by others) will get you a hefty fine when they catch you.

G'luck!
Reply:Their are 2 ways to go about it. The recommended way is to get a recovery pump and hoses and a recovery tank. The old school way is to get a freon tank and place in it a tub of ice. Using freon gauges you hook up the yellow hose to the tank and the blue hose to the low side of the unit. with the appliance above the tank the freon will gravitate into the freon bottle no pumps needed. When the pressure reads 0 PSI on the low side gauge, all of the freon has been evacuated out of the appliance.
