Try this program. It is a fast install and will tell you what is recoverable and how much of it is there.

Reply:If you did a "QUICK" format, then there is a possibility that your files are still there. MAYBE. If you did a CLEAN format, then it's bye bye forever.

You can download some utilities here that can help you recover the files.

Reply:Yes, it's definitely possible. I accidentally deleted a year's worth of pictures after re-installing Windows, and was able to get them all back.

Windows only "marks" a file as deleted when you delete them, but it doesn't actually remove files from your system (it just replaces them with other files over time). So the more you use your computer, the greater the chances of those files getting overwritten.

This is true for re-installing Windows, cleaning out your recycle bin and even reformatting your system.

I use a program called File Recover that shows all of the files that have been deleted, and the ones that can be recovered, and have also used professional data recovery services. File Recover is a good first start though, since data recovery services cost hundreds of dollars.
Reply:Even if you only did a quick format it is possible that you overwrote all or part of the document when you installed Win XP. If so then even a segment level recovery will not get all of the document. If you have a printed copy you will be better off spending your time retypeing it or get it scanned.
