We recently ran our A/C fan with the cool and heat settings to off, and noticed it was a lot cooler in the house than before the fan was running. I have always known that under many conditions a whole house fan can bring cooler air into the home, but for some reason I have a mindblock regarding turning on the A/C blower without the A/C actually being on. Is it very much more expensive to run the A/C with cool than without (i.e. could I run the full A/C for 25% more $$$ and be 100% comfortable, or is blower only a lot more inexpensive?).
How much does running the A/C blower cost?
Most furnace fans are 1/5 horsepower while compressor motors are more like 2 horsepower so there is no comparison to how much they cost, the furnace fan is about a dollar a day. What you will find is that the basement will warm up and the fan will not cool you anymore when it is hot enough outside.
