What are the odds of me having an emergency c-section?

I am 34 weeks pregnant and starting to really worry about labor and delivery. I am hoping all goes well, but i cant stop thinking about everything that can go wrong. I want to be educated on things so if something happens i know what is going on ya know? Everything so far has been normal in my pregnancy. Have any of you had to have an emergency c-section and if so why? How was it?

What are the odds of me having an emergency c-section?
first relax.. your odds are slim since you have had a normal pregnancy, the only reason why they do emergancy c- sections if the baby is in distress or you are, if you have concerns talk to your doctor he/she can tell you more :)
Reply:Hi. I am the mother of 3, with two normal vaginal deliveries. I would say that chances for an emergency C-section is probably pretty slim. BUT weird things happen. I had to have an emergency C-section with my third child. I was totally unprepared. Labor had been induced a week after my due date. Nothing was progressing very well, but when the doc broke my water, the cord came out. This is called a prolapsed cord. I had never heard of it. Anyway, there was no way for the baby to deliver naturally because that would have cut off his blood supply and all. So I was wheeled thru the hospital with the doc holding my baby up off of the cord until they could do the surgery. It was a scary moment, but everything turned out just perfect...except for the longer recovery.

I would say that you are going to have a "normal" delivery, but odd things happen and you have to have faith in the doctor and staff to be knowledgable and prepared. You don't worry about things, that is the doctor's job.

Best of luck to ya.
Reply:You have enough to worry about without getting upset about something nobody is going to know for a while. You are at a beautiful stage of life where you have live inside you and no idea if your shoes match. You can eat for two, yet it's hard to get close to the table. My wife had the same worries thirty six years ago when we were driving to the hospital. She didn't have a c-section. We did have twins which was a bigger shock! Bless Ya, you sound like your going to be a great mom.
Reply:I had to have two. One for severe preeclampsia, the other for fetal distress after 31 hrs of labor and only dilating to 1cm the whole time (she was too big to deliver vaginally.)

If everything is going normally for you up to this point, why worry needlessly? You can drive yourself nuts with all the what-ifs. Try changing your thinking from "what if I have to have an emergency C-section?" to "what if everything goes smoothly and I'm getting myself worked up for nothing?"

Worrying won't change the outcome. So please try to enjoy this time in your life and not stress out so much when everything is fine.

(((HUGS))) and good luck!!!
Reply:It's fairly common. I had one, my sister in law had two. But I'm not trying to scare you. More women have c-section free births than not. But a lot of time doctors are quick to do a c-section. I was totally unprepared for it and it is still hard for me 2 years later. At least you are thinking of it.
Reply:okay. if you cant push the baby out or if your pelvis is to small for the baby you will have a c-section. once u have one you'll always will get one each time u get pregnant. The most u can have is 3 because of high risk like hemerging. I had 2 and afterward it hurts like hell and its really hard to go to the restroom good luck
Reply:I had an emergency c/s.

I had a "model" first pregnancy. I don't think it could have gone any better. It was perfect!

Then came labor. I labored forever, was having contractions 1-2 min apart and wasn't making any progress. I only dilated to about a 2. My baby's h/b was lost with each cx, so we did the internal fetal monitor. He was in such distress my OB stood up and yelled c-section STAT!!

Things went WILD in my room and it was all a little scary. Once in the OR they attempted giving me a spinal. It didn't take, so they had to gas me(put me out) and get my baby delivered!!

Yes, all this sounds scary, but it was all for the best!! I have a happy healthy 7 yr old now!!

The c/s was as bad as I had imagined it all in my head before ever having one. I hate that I had to be put out, but the recovery for me was very quick. My best advice is IF you do have to have get up and walk as quickly as you can.

Now, I've had 3 c-sections(last one was 3 mos ago) with twins and I contribute my quick recoveries to getting up and moving around!!

Enjoy these last weeks of your pregnancy. Don't fret over what "may" happen or go wrong. It will all be over with soon enough and no matter if you go vaginal or c-section it will all soon be a thing of the past when you hold that precious little one for the first time!!

Congrats and goodluck!!
Reply:I would say not to worry your slef, this is some that if it happens that you can't control, and if you are really worred call the hos. that you are going to deliver at and see if they have any classes you could take, that is what helped me.
