We plan on visiting D. C. in October. Which days during the week would be the least congested?
When is the best day during the week to visit Washington D C to avoid congestion?
Saturday or Sunday. There is no traffic on weekends cuz everybody is home.
Reply:Sundays are the best. There not too much congestion, unless the Redskins are playing at home. Highway constructions are all over the area right now, and thats causing alotta highway back-ups monday thru saturday.
Reply:October is actually a good time to visit DC. The summer crowds are gone, and the weather is still very nice. I enjoy playing tourist in my city in October.
The answer to your question depends on which congestion you are talking about. There are two kinds, and two different answers.
If you are talking about traffic congestion - full parking lots on metros, full highways, stop and go traffic, then this tends to happen largely on weekdays, Monday through Friday. If you are traveling into DC on a weekend, it's fairly easy to park at any metro station (and parking is free on weekends) and take a train into the city, just about any time.
If you are talking about congestion at the various museums and attractions, like the line to the Capitol and Washington Monument tours, the crush of people in the air and space museum and the like, then the weekends are the worst, of course, and the weekdays, particularly tuesday to thursday are the best. On Wednesday morning you can find yourself almost alone in many of the museums.
Note that any time driving in the city can be a problem, and parking is always terrible and expensive. Metro is the way to go.
Note that there are a few places that are not open on weekends. Generally the most notable of these is the Supreme Court, and the bureau of Engraving and Printing.
Reply:Julie pretty much said everything. Have fun in DC! :)
Reply:Not to be rude but, good luck with that.
Reply:On the weekends all of the business traffic is gone. Still, the tourist traffic can be heavy. To avoid it, you have to go on a rainy and cold day in January. Then, you can have it almost to yourself (except for the locals, of course). I hope you are visiting the Museum of Natural History, especially if you are taking children. That is one of the happiest memories of my childhood. Bon voyage!
Reply:Anytime the Redskins are playing!
